Charlotte Amalie Harbor is one of the best natural harbors in the Caribbean — deep, well-sheltered, and rimmed by steep green hills. The Paradise Point Skyride gives you the one view that explains the city's entire history: standing roughly 700 feet above the water, looking down at the harbor, Hassel Island, and the sea lanes that made St. Thomas a trading hub for three centuries.

The gondola runs from a terminal just west of the main cruise ship piers, crossing the hillside in about six minutes. At the top, the gondola deposits you on a ridge with an unobstructed line of sight over the harbor and out toward the British Virgin Islands on the eastern horizon.

The View

The view is genuinely worth the trip. Below you, Charlotte Amalie's red-roofed colonial waterfront sits against the harbor. Hassel Island — a small island with a complex military and maritime history — floats in the middle ground. Water Island sits beyond it to the west. On clear days, which are most days, you can pick out St. John to the east and the outline of Tortola in the BVI to the northeast. Cruise ships docked at the terminals look surprisingly small from this height.

The best light is in the morning, when the sun illuminates the harbor from the east and the city's colors are sharpest. Late afternoon has the tradeoff of golden light from the west, but the harbor tends to be hazy by then. The view during sunset is popular but the gondola schedule may require you to confirm last-ride times.

At the Top

The observation area includes a bar serving tropical drinks, a restaurant, a gift shop, and gardens where hummingbirds visit flowering plants. Flamingos are kept on the grounds — an unusual sight at a hilltop overlook. The whole experience at the top takes roughly 20-30 minutes for most visitors; you could stay longer if you're eating.

There's also a hiking trail connecting the top to the base — a direct route down through the hillside vegetation. The trail is steep and can be slippery in wet weather, but it's a legitimate option for visitors who want a different return experience or who prefer to walk up and ride down.

Practical Details

The Skyride base terminal is a short walk or taxi ride from the cruise ship piers. Admission is charged per person for the gondola round trip. The ride operates daily but hours can vary — confirm the current schedule before heading over, particularly during the low season when hours may be reduced. The site tends to be busy when multiple cruise ships are in port; arriving right when it opens or in the late afternoon usually means shorter waits.

Local tip: Combine the Skyride with a walk through Charlotte Amalie's historic upper town. The 99 Steps and Blackbeard's Castle are on the hill immediately east of the Skyride, roughly a 10-minute walk from the base terminal. The two together make a morning before the harbor fills with day crowds.
