St. John is the smallest and most-protected of the three U.S. Virgin Islands. Sixty percent of the island is Virgin Islands National Park, which means most of the beaches, hiking trails, and underwater snorkeling sites are federally preserved — no development, no jet skis, no shoreline construction. Trunk Bay (with its underwater snorkeling trail), Maho Bay (sea turtle grass beds), and Honeymoon Beach are the three classic spots; Cinnamon Bay and Hawksnest are the locals' picks for fewer crowds.

The standard way to St. John is the 20-minute car ferry from Red Hook on St. Thomas. Most travelers book a full-day catamaran out of Red Hook or Cruz Bay (St. John's main town) that visits 2-3 snorkel sites and lunch at a beach. If you're staying on St. John, you can charter directly from Cruz Bay; otherwise plan to start your day on St. Thomas.
