About St. Croix

St. Croix is the largest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands by land area but the least-visited. The two main towns — Christiansted on the north coast and Frederiksted on the west — are 17 miles apart, which is wide for a 28-mile-long island. Most water-based tours leave from Christiansted's harbor and head to Buck Island Reef National Monument, the only fully-marine national monument in the U.S. The reef has an underwater snorkel trail similar to Trunk Bay on St. John but with much bigger elkhorn coral colonies.

St. Croix gets fewer cruise ships than St. Thomas, which means catamaran tours feel less crowded; the trade-off is fewer departures per day. If you're staying on St. Croix and want to dive, the Frederiksted Pier is a famous shore-dive site with sponges, octopuses, and seahorses living on the pier pilings. The island is also home to the original Cruzan Rum distillery (free tours) and a working organic farm restaurant scene that's quietly respected by the food press.
